Red Velvet Pancakes: An Accidental Shooting

It was early winter, around December, nothing out of the ordinary, Matthew had a large hoodie on with the sleeves pushed up as he walked around the log cabin he and his boyfriend shared. People claimed Matt to be ‘scary’ and out of the ordinary and strikingly similar to Matthew. Matthew couldn’t count how many times he’d been asked if he and Matt were brothers. Matthew looked out the window, he also couldn’t stand the secrets Matt was hiding from him; he had made a promise not to go into the woods, but he felt as though something was pulling him there, calling his name.
He sighed softly as he put the last plate away in the cupboard as he pulled his hoodie sleeves down. Matthew stared around the kitchen, closing the cupboard door. He watched the snow drift from the sky, almost as if the clouds were losing their own fluff. He walked out to the entrance before pulling on an early winter jacket and his boots and tripping out the front door. Matthew sighed softly and looked around finding his red toque and matching gloves before walking out.
“I’ll figure out whatever it is.” He said to himself as he wrapped his scarf around his neck. Matthew smiled and walked out of the cabin and over to the entrance of the woods, it was early afternoon, the early December sun hidden behind clouds as the snow continued falling. Matthew was standing on the edge of the woods, looking in, Matt had warned him not to go, but he still wanted to...
He wasn't sure why but it was as if they were calling him, 'Maaaaaaaaattheeeewwwww' he heard his voice among the wind. He shook his head and laughed, "It's just the woods." Matthew assured himself. The small blonde swallowed and walked into the woods. He smiled, "See nothing bad." He giggled, before walking further onto the trail. He heard rustling and began growing uneasy.
"I thought I told you poachers to stay off my land." A gruff voice snarled. Before Matthew could protest he turned quickly and heard a loud bang and wetness form around his stomach. Matthew coughed and leaned against a tree, the voice sounded familiar, but who was it? It... "M-M-M... Matt...." He whimpered looking at his boyfriend.
Mathieu Williams, twenty four years of age, and four years older than Matthew; they had been best friends, then the friendship grew, he was from Montreal Quebec whereas the other man was from Ottawa Ontario. They’d both moved around the same time to New Brunswick leaving behind friends, and some family. They were both outcasts but, outcasts together. Mathieu went by Matt and he was always there for the smaller Canadian. It wasn’t any different now that they were both fresh out of University and College. They lived together, in the woods where no one could bother them.
Matthew had been warned; so many times he’d been warned by Matt not to go in. But that was only because the forester didn’t want Matthew to know what he really did. He hunted, but not animals; other men. Poachers and rogue lumberjacks. Matthew looked at Matt before collapsing against the tree hitting the ground roughly.
“M-Ma-Matt…. Matthew…” When it sunk in what had happened he dropped his gun and ran to the blonde. Another gun fire went off in the opposite direction. Matt ran to the smaller blond shaking him. “Matthew! Mattie! Stop! This isn’t funny! Wake up!!” Matt screamed shaking him.
Matthew weakly opened his eyes, “M-M-Mathieu?” He whispered weakly. Matt looked at him, tears streaming down his face, “Y-You… s-s-s” Matthew cut himself short, as he drew in a sharp breath. “S-stop c-cry-crying, p-please…” Matthew whimpered. Matt didn’t stop like he was asked instead he just sobbed more. “Matt… p-please s-s-stop….” Matthew begged. Matt whimpered looking at him
“I’m sorry Mattie please don’t die please you can’t leave me. Mattie, please, please don’t go.” Matt looked up at the sky to now see that instead of snow, the sky was crying, much like the strawberry blond. Matt lifted the smaller Canadian off the ground making him cry out in pain.
“It… it hurts Matt, make it stop. Please make the pain stop!!” Matthew sobbed. Matt held the blond to him as he desperately screamed for Kumajiro, The large black bear didn’t respond to the screams making Matt only panic that much more. Damnit he thought as he braced himself weaving in and out of branches and twigs. His plaid shirt came off on a tree but matt wore bandages under his shirt to cover the feeble attempts to stitch his wounds and keep them from Mattie.
“I’m going to I promise… you’ll be okay Matthew, I promise you’ll be okay, I’ve never lied to you before, I just I work two jobs.” Matt continued talking as the rain beat down on him and Matthew. It being December the air was cold, no doubt if they didn’t get somewhere warm and dry, not only would Matt lose Matthew they’d both end up with hypothermia. Matthew nodded showing that he understood as he leaned against the hard chiseled body Matt had acquired over the years of being a lumberjack.
Finally they were out into open air; Matt looked around for any sign of life unfortunately. Nothing. He fumbled for Matthew’s phone out of his hoodie pocket. When he finally got it out, he quickly dialed 911. When the call connected Matt explained to the best of his abilities the situation.
“911, what is your emergency?” The dispatcher asked. “My Boyfriend’s been shot, we’re on the side of the Trans Canada! Please we’re just a five minute drive from the hospital, due north. Please come quick.” Matt cried.
“Calm down sir, we’ll be there as soon as we can.” She said softly.”I promise sir we’ll be there as soon as we can. I promise would you like to stay on the line?” She asked. Matt shook his head as if she could see him. “I’ll be okay thank you. Please hurry…” Matt whimpered. The woman’s voice sounded pleasant to Matt, he knew that help was on its way and he just started walking toward the hospital. He walked for five minutes as Matthew lie limply in his arms barely breathing.
“Mattie?” Matthew spoke, barely more than a squeak. Matt looked at him, eyes watering, tears falling down his cheeks as he felt Matthew tremor in his arms.
“It’s okay Matthew; you’ll be fine I promise…. I love you, Je t’aime Matthew.  Je t’aime. Je t’aime.” He whispered. Finally the sound of sirens blared, and lights began flashing and the headlights from the Ambulance finally bounced off of Matt and Matthew.
“It’s so cold.” Matthew shuddered; leaning against Matt’s chest touching the bandages, tracing all the scars he could feel, every stitch. Matt didn’t wince as he pulled Matthew closer as the ambulance stopped and pulled over. The sun had already seemed to have disappeared over the horizon as the darkness covered the New Brunswick soil. Matthew was taken by the Paramedics much to the dislike of the both of them.
“MATTHEW!” Matt screamed.
“MATT!!!!” The other returned the shouts reaching out to his lover. “MATT PLEASE!!!” Matthew screamed in pain. Matt reached out trying to grab his lover’s hand, failing impeccably. “STOP IT HURTS!!!!” He screamed as they applied pressure to the wound.
“We’re sorry sir, but we have to try and stop the bleeding and get you stable so we can take you to the hospital. Would you like your friend in here?” a nurse asked softly. Matthew shook his head, “He’s more than a friend Miss.” He whispered. Matt jumped into the ambulance. “I was saving this for when I got home Matthew Williams, would you do me the honor of marrying me?” He asked kneeling on one knee.
Matthew lifted his head, wide eyes; as his heart rate increased. “M-M-Ma… Mathieu?” He asked softly looking at the strawberry blond. Wanting just to hug him and kiss him and tell him everything would be alright. “How… How could I even say no?” He asked.
“I shot you.”
“Accidentally.”
“I thought you were a bear.”
“Exactly it was accidental.”
“I’m sorry Mattie….”
“C’mere and kiss me you sweaty lumberjack.” Matthew smiled as Matt walked over and kissed Matthew roughly.
“Sir, can you help us apply pressure please?” A nurse asked.
Matt nodded, “I can fix this Mattie, I’ve been shot like this before, but you’re a little more feminine than I am,” Matt chuckled softly as he lifted Matthew’s shirt and removed some bandages from the cupboard and he ripped off a small square as he held it on Matthew’s stomach.
“I’m sorry Matt… I shouldn’t have gone into the woods.” Matthew winced.
Matt shrugged placing a kiss on Matthew’s cheek. “Don’t worry ‘bout it Mattie, okay?” He asked.
Matthew nodded. “What do you mean by feminine?”He questioned.
“You look like a figure skater Matthew, I mean you’re well built, but you’re more feminine. Not like me, I hack down trees and play hockey, and I mean you play hockey too but c’mon you’re not as big as I am.” Matt winked. Matthew frowned but shrugged.
“You’re looking a lot better mister Williams.” The nurse murmured as Matt reduced pressure. The ambulance started moving and the sirens wailed. Mathew was still bleeding badly. Matt applied more pressure to Matthew’s wounds making him wince slightly.
“Th-thanks sir,” Matthew whispered addressing the nurse.  The man smiled and nodded. The nurse hummed as he held onto the side of the wall as the ambulance quickly drove to the hospital. Matthew was still losing blood at a rapid rate and it wasn’t letting up. Did Matt really hit a main artery, was Matt going to lose his fiancé?
Finally the ambulance turned into a driveway and finally the doors flew open. Matthew was strapped down to the stretcher as he was transferred over to a gurney where they quickly rush him into the OR. Hours seemed longer than days as he waited for Matthew to come and be taken to his room. Finally they wheeled him back out and Matthew lie almost emotionlessly on the gurney as they moved him back to a bed and covered him back up.
Matt walked into the hospital room where Matthew still lies but unconscious. "Can I stay here?" He asked softly as he looked at the small frail body before him. She looked over at the tall gruff looking man whose hands were covered in blood.
"Yes, you can sir, only until visiting hours are over and then you'll have to go home though sir. I'm very sorry." she whispered "But we're not allowed to have visitors here past visiting hours...." she looked at him and swallowed nervously. It'd be a lie if she said this man before her didn't intimidate her.
"Visiting hours can fuck right off." He glared, "My boyfriend's been shot and I must stick with visiting hours?" Matt glowered at the small woman. She tensed, remembering the rules, unless a guest poses a threat to a doctor's or patient's life, you can't kick them out of the room.
She sighed, I'm sorry sir, but rules are rules." There was a brief pause. Just as Matt was about to continue arguing the nurse piped up again. "I'm sorry. I know what it's like; my boyfriend did the same thing after I got hurt really bad. I promise sir, I will take care of my patient." The nurse pressed.
"M-Matt...." Matthew whispered weakly with his eyes still closed. Matt completely intentionally and blatantly ignored the nurse as he collapsed in a chair having wiped his hands on his pant-leg he held his boyfriend’s hand tightly.
"I'm here Mattie." He said softly. Matthew opened his eyes weakly and gave a small smile. "I have a word... so big yet small..... That’s both happy and sad..." He whispered weakly as his smile slowly faded. "H-Hello"
"Hmm, Mattie, what are you on about?" Matt asked. He looked over the small Canadian’s features.
"Hello." He smiled weakly. "Hello Matt..." He whispered. "I realized the way we met, I never even said hello." He smiled.
Matt smiled at him, kissing his forehead lightly, "You're uh sweet Mattie." The nurse looked at Matthew and sat down on his other side.
"How did you two meet?" She asked stroking his hair out of his face.
Matthew smiled weakly. "W-well we worked together for a really long time so we kinda knew each other that way. However one day it was really late and my older brother Alfred was out drinking. He was drunk and hanging off of everyone...." He chuckled. "And then Matt got my number off of Al's phone... he called me and I gave the address... so when I took Alfred in I invited Matt in for uhm... r-red velvet pancakes since their my favorite. Then finally started to get to know each other... a-and then a month passed and then.... w-well.... we started dating... and we've been going out ever since." He whispered. "And I've never loved anyone more than I love him." He looked at Matt and smiled a little less weak and chuckled. "Je t'aime Mon amour; I love you Matt."
“Je t’aime aussi Mon amour,” Matt smiled, kissing Matthew gently. "don't tell anyone I cried though... okay?" Matt asked softly.
"Sure."

Oh My gosh!!! First of all, I'm REALLY glad that Mattie didn't die... I was SO scared there for a moment...

I actually cried there, for a second...

Anyway, the only critique that I have, is that the use of commas in a few key places might have made the story quite a bit easier to understand.

Yeah, but aside from that, the story itself, and the way it's written is perfect.

There was just enough detail to make it easy to picture, and realistic, but not so much that it became gory. (That wouldn't be good...)

Overall LOVED the story!!

And, I'm really glad that while it stayed emotional throughout most of the story, it had a happy ending!

(I wish I could give 'Impact' a six star rating...)
